The carpenters have finished most of the second floor railing. It is made of glu-lam (Glue Lamination) unfinished poplar so it will provide a solid rail for safety and earthquake strength. They will finish it with a natural looking, UV protective, clear coating, the same as the interior walls.
We opted for a custom made railing vice the standard factory-made rails since the factory stuff would not match the rest of the construction and they look unsightly. Besides, the carpenters were happy to be able to be creative and do carpentry for a change!
As soon as they finish the stairwell, they will put the rest of the rail in...maybe next week!
